Where spirits leave the world of light
and cast one last look behind

This series was inspired by a visit to Cape Reinga at a time when I was particularly concerned with the concepts of mortality and life after death.
Cape Reinga (in Māori Te Rerenga Wairua or The leaping place of the spirits) is located at the northernmost extreme of New Zealand on a wild and wind-swept promontory, where the Tasman Sea and the Pacif Ocean meet.
It is here that, after death, all Māori spirits travel up the coast to a pohutukawa tree on the headland of the Cape.
They descend into the underworld (in Māori Reinga) by sliding down a root into the sea below. The spirits then travel underwater to the Three Kings Islands where they rise from the sea to bid their last farewell before returning to Hawaiki, the land of their ancestors.
